Jason Wu, Pre-Fall 2012
Another thing I loved about this collection was how he chose to use his eveningwear fabrics to full advantage. This glossy blue and black jacquard does just as well in a hot little pants suit as it does in a gown. Offering both looks to appeal to diverse customers is a smart move.
I absolutely loved Wu’s past two collections, and I am so happy to see yet another A+ offering. He has carried over a bit of the embellishment motifs we have seen before, but done up in fresh ways- for example on the camel cape with black details. The outerwear is extraordinary in the sense that it looks new, but also traditional enough not to be obnoxious and self-consciously “new”. The top two looks- obsessed.
Moving along, lots of good dresses and skirts (though the teardrop cut-out thing got tired after the second or third time we saw it, and thus I’ve excluded it from this post) that would go from day to evening.
This collection just feels really right, it hit a sweet spot with a bit of glam, a bit of prep, and a bit of hipster (in the trousers with triangle insets). I see it sort of as the 2012 version of what the girls who went to school with Holden Caulfield might wear today.
